Spidery winter blooms of a species witch hazel that is native to Mississippi and only described in this century. It’s blooms are red and this clone has lovely yellow tips. Still rare in the wild and in cultivation. Known as Big leaf witch hazel or Hamamelis ovalis. Blooming now - end of January in my USDA zone 6-7 garden.

Blub, blub - bubblers keep air holes open in our frozen ponds. The weather is frigid - 9 degrees Fahrenheit this morning with a real feel of 3. That is about minus 12 or 13 in Celsius. The ice is thick enough to walk on. We have goldfish and koi in the pond so we need to let them have fresh air. I hope that you enjoy the peaceful bubbling sounds on the third video and the strange star-shaped air hole in another pond on the second one. Hope that you are staying warm.

Snowdrops emerging through snow. Such a hardy flowering bulb that is a welcome winter treat.

A few inches of snow today turned the garden into a wintery wonderland. Sparkling snowfalls from the trees and frozen ponds provided much to observe. How different the garden looks when covered in a white blanket.

Ice patterns - fascinating natural formations of frozen puddles. I can’t decide which one I like best. Amy thoughts? It might make a great wallpaper.

2021 - will we want to remember it or forget it? Looking back on the Northview Garden best nine grid for the year with a lot of pink! Peaceful moment sitting under the American Beech tree. It clings onto its russet colored leaves that rustle in the slightest breeze. Warm weather today and misty after torrential rain last night. Possibility of snow tomorrow. I cleared up wet matted leaves from emerging snowdrop clumps and pulled up some winter cool season weeds.

Happy new year from Northview Garden. Wishing all of you a wonderful year full of health, happiness, and gardening. This lovely, fragrant witch hazel popped out to greet the new year. It is always an early bloomer. The cultivar name is Rochester. I am particularly fond of it for its out of season blooms, scent and touch of color in the garden. I also love the name Rochester as I grew up in Kent, England near to the town of Rochester.

Ginkgo leaf carpet now that all the leaves turned golden yellow and fell overnight. This is from a old female ginkgo that was planted by Wilmer Atkinson- the founding editor of the Farm Journal.

Native American witch hazel in bloom - Hamamelis virginiana. This is the fall blooming one that starts the witch hazel season. It is used to make the astringent and antiseptic liquid extract. Looks great in the garden too.

Acer shirasawanum Palmatifolium backlit in autumnal colors. At this time of year little flashes of bright color call out to me as the landscape turns to shades of brown, evergreen and beige.

Somehow I missed this little beauty yesterday. This snowdrop has green outer tips to its rounded outers. It is easy to become obsessed with snowdrops when not much else is in bloom!

Despite the cold there are some reblooming irises flowering. First photo is the dwarf ‘Thrice Blessed’ and the second is a new one this year called ‘Mulligan’ that is intermediate in height. I like seeing them now but I hope that they are saving some energy to bloom in spring when it seems much more in keeping.

The first snowdrops of the winter season. On my morning garden walk I had this lovely surprise. Long outers, a heart-shaped green inner mark, and relatively tall stems make these early beauties stand out above the fallen leaves. What a treat!

Fothergilla leaf in its fall color - no filter. This shrub is native to the southeastern part of North America. Most gardeners think of the spring show of bottle-brush like flowers but tend to forget this second season of interest. Thrives in moist well-drained soil in afternoon shade.

Honeysuckle berries are semi-translucent in the low angled light. I leave them on the vine for the birds to eat. This is a vine called Lonicera sempervirens. The earlier tubular flowers are a hummingbird favorite. I often see them buzzing from flower to flowers early in the morning and at dusk. If I am working close by they might come up and whizz by your ear. As if to investigate you. Such cool birds. Not having grown up them it is one of the special treats of gardening in North America and I plant as many plants as possible for them.
